Direct air capture gets the headlines, but biochar quietly delivers more actual carbon removal than almost any engineered method on the market. Biochar carbon credits sit in the sweet spot between forestry’s low cost and DAC’s permanence — which is why they’ve become the workhorse of corporate removal portfolios.

What biochar is

Biochar is charcoal made for carbon storage rather than fuel. Biomass residues — crop waste, forestry offcuts, nut shells — are heated to 350–700°C with little or no oxygen, a process called pyrolysis. Instead of rotting or burning (which returns CO2 to the air within months or years), the carbon is converted into a stable, porous char that resists decomposition for centuries to millennia. Worked into farmland, biochar also improves water retention, nutrient availability, and soil microbial life — a rare climate solution that farmers actively want.

How the credits work

The accounting is refreshingly direct. The feedstock’s carbon content is measured, the pyrolysis process is monitored, and the stable carbon fraction of the resulting char is lab-verified. One tonne of CO2-equivalent locked in biochar equals one removal credit. Standards like Puro.earth and Verra’s biochar methodology govern measurement, and because production happens at industrial facilities rather than across landscapes, verification is cheaper and tighter than for forest projects. No baselines, minimal leakage, measurable permanence: auditors love it.

What biochar credits cost

Around $177 per tonne on average in 2026 — a fraction of DAC’s $500+, but with durability far beyond forestry’s. That price reflects real production costs: feedstock logistics, pyrolysis plants, and lab verification. As facilities scale and pyrolysis heat gets monetized (the process co-produces usable energy), prices are expected to drift down while volumes climb.

Why buyers like it

Biochar is the pragmatist’s removal. It’s deliverable now — credits represent carbon already locked away, not promised future capture. It’s durable enough to satisfy science-based frameworks pushing corporates toward long-lived removals. And it carries co-benefits — waste valorization, soil health, rural income — that make for an honest sustainability story. The result: biochar routinely accounts for the largest share of delivered engineered removals year after year.

The caveats

Feedstock must genuinely be waste — dedicated crops grown for biochar can compete with food and erase the climate benefit. Permanence, while excellent, varies with production temperature and soil conditions; quality standards address this with conservative decay factors. And supply, though growing fast, remains modest against corporate demand.

Buyer’s checklist

Puro.earth or Verra certification; verified stable-carbon fraction; waste-based feedstock; application documented (soil or approved use); retirement in your name. Tick those and biochar may be the best value-per-durable-tonne in today’s market.
